Where things stood

Almacenes TÍA runs a large-scale e-commerce ecosystem, with thousands of products and a heavy reliance on Google to bring traffic to its online catalog.

There were, however, technical problems limiting both organic indexing and the correct publication of products in Google Merchant Center. Search Console reported 1,848,531 non-indexed pages against barely 39,200 indexed ones.

Merchant Center, in parallel, had accumulated errors in images, site connection, categories, policies, and product configuration. The diagnosis showed that some came from the information published on the site and others from the synchronization between Magento and Merchant Center.

The challenge was to restore a healthy indexing structure and get as many products as possible available for Google Shopping, without disrupting how the store ran.

What we built

  1. 1

    Technical diagnosis and prioritization

We went through what Search Console and Merchant Center were reporting and classified every problem by origin and by impact. That produced a work plan focused on indexing, images, site connection, policies, and product configuration.

  2. 2

    SEO and indexing work

We fixed canonical tags, restructured robots.txt, consolidated sitemaps, resolved 404 and 403 errors, adjusted redirects, and reviewed noindex tags, so that Google would concentrate its crawling on the pages that matter.

  3. 3

    Merchant Center and follow-up

We reviewed every error one by one across data sources, images, and categories: we updated sitemaps, replaced images, and filed appeals where they applied. The project closed with a monitoring phase to catch new errors coming out of the constant catalog updates.

Results

The work transformed the site’s indexing. Indexed pages went from 39,200 to 262,095, growth of 568.63%. Non-indexed pages fell from 1,848,531 to 785,449, a reduction of 57.51%.

In Merchant Center, errors ended at around 0.6% of published products, and more than 90% of the catalog became eligible to show up in both free listings and paid campaigns.

The result is a search and e-commerce ecosystem technically ready to make use of organic traffic and Shopping campaigns.
